Surabaya – Department of Chemistry Universitas Airlangga (Unair) made another proud achievement by successfully achieving international accreditation from the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) in the undergraduate (S1) and master (S2) study programs at once. RSC is a world-leading institution from the UK that focuses on the development of chemistry. This accreditation is clear proof of international recognition of the excellence of the Unair Chemistry Department in providing quality education at the undergraduate and master’s levels, following international qualifications.

This accreditation process is not easy, involving various stages of rigorous evaluation. The assessment team from RSC reviewed the curriculum, laboratory facilities, research quality, and the competence of the teaching staff at the Department of Chemistry, Unair. A series of assessment activities by the Assessors Team from the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) was completed on Monday, February 10, 2025.

The RSC assessor team was chaired by Prof. Dr. Zanariah binti Abdullah from the University of Malaya (Malaysia) and consisted of 3 members, namely Dr. June McCombie from the University of Nottingham (UK), Shreyan Patel from the RSC, and Prof. Yuni Krisyuningsih Krisnandi from the University of Indonesia. After going through a series of assessments, the RSC finally gave official recognition that the Unair Chemistry study program was worthy of accreditation status.

Chairman of the Department of Chemistry, Prof. Mochammad Zakki Fahmi, Ph.D, stated that this achievement was the result of the hard work of the entire academic community and related stakeholders. “We are very grateful and proud of this accreditation. This is proof that the chemistry study program at Unair has met international standards and can compete at the global level,” he said. The man who is also known as a nanotechnology expert hopes that in the future with the achievement of accreditation by this UK-based International Institution and also the inclusion of the Unair Chemistry Department on the QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) by subject radar (Occupying the third position in the field of chemistry in Indonesia), the Department is expected to have a significant impact on the development of chemistry in the world and, in particular, in Indonesia.

The Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, Prof. Dr. Miratul Khasanah, M.Si, also appreciated the success and hoped that this RSC international accreditation could further improve the competitiveness of Unair graduates in the world of work and the academic field. On the other hand, this international accreditation will bring Unair and its study programs in line with other universities in the global arena. “With the achievement of this international accreditation, our graduates have greater opportunities to continue their studies abroad or work in global companies,” said the Professor of Sensor Electrometry.

This success is also expected to encourage the improvement of research quality and international collaboration in the field of chemistry. The Unair Department of Chemistry is committed to continuously improving the quality of education, expanding cooperation networks with foreign institutions, and producing graduates who are competent and ready to compete in the era of globalization.

With accreditation from RSC, the Department of Chemistry, Unair further strengthens its position as one of the best chemistry education institutions in Indonesia. This achievement is expected to motivate all Unair academicians to continue to innovate and contribute to the development of chemistry in the national and international arena. (KUH)
