class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>On Thursday, March 20, 2025, a guest lecture was held with the material \u201cLipid production by Rhodotorula strains using Bio-Wastes\u201d for the Advanced Biochemistry course. The event started with a welcome from Prof. Nyoman to Prof. Fujiyama. This guest lecture discussed the production of fat from Rhodotorula strains using biological waste. It is known that Rhodotorula belongs to the phylum Ascomycetes. The biological waste is known to contain macro and micro nutrients, so it can be a good fermentation feedstock to produce fat products.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cd46e76 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cd46e76\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Prof. Nyoman also shared his experience in his research that utilizes biomass. He shared his experience extracting palm oil using several waste degrading enzymes, such as xylanolytic and cellulolytic enzymes. The aim was to degrade the cells in the palm oil mill waste (extract residual oil). While the efficiency and quality are not as good as with the first extraction, it is still feasible to develop as a biodiesel feedstock. This could be a solution to the problem of using palm oil for biodiesel, which is not recommended because it is expensive and will compete with fuel.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-de1ba40 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"de1ba40\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>After Prof. Fujiyama&#8217;s presentation, there was a discussion session from each group. The first question asked about the possibility of biomass fat production can be processed into biodiesel products, where the goal can be used as a commercial product and also whether there is a difference in quality with biodiesel products from palm oil. The Director of ICBiotech explained that there is no difference, and that using biodiesel products from waste will reduce the cost by up to two times.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d41b6c6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d41b6c6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The next question was about how to detect if a waste still has oil content left. Then Prof. Fujiyama explained that detecting oil content in waste can be done by the transesterification reaction, where triglycerides are reacted with methanol, then produce methyl esters of fatty acids and glycerol. The methyl esters can be easily detected and determined with a gas chromatography device coupled (tandem) with mass spectrometry \/ Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). With the help of these devices, not only quantitative information on levels can be obtained, but also qualitative information, such as the type of fatty acids contained in the waste. All analyses can be done in a fairly short time.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7e7750a elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"7e7750a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"wp-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"341\" src=\"https:\/\/kimia.fst.unair.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2025\/03\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-03-25-at-09.43.26_4a410943.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full wp-image-3430\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kimia.fst.unair.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2025\/03\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-03-25-at-09.43.26_4a410943.jpg 512w, https:\/\/kimia.fst.unair.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2025\/03\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-03-25-at-09.43.26_4a410943-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figcaption class=\"widget-image-caption wp-caption-text\">All participants were enthusiastic in asking questions in the discussion session<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-84537a3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"84537a3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The next question was about the preference for fatty acid use, where Prof. Fujiyama&#8217;s research results used oleic acid, not other fatty acids. The man then explained that it is possible to use other fatty acids, but oleic acid is the most optimal or the best material used for making biodiesel. The last question asked about the use of liquid-phase materials in biodiesel products. Prof. Fujiyama briefly explained that in the liquid phase, the synthesis and purification of the biodiesel formed becomes easier. The guest lecture was then closed after the question and answer session, and continued with a documentation session to commemorate the
