The Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Technology, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), contributed to the Workshop on Strengthening the Competencies of Senior High School/Madrasah Aliyah Chemistry Teachers in Learning, Problem-Solving, and Chemistry Assessment, held on Saturday, September 19, 2026. The workshop was attended by teachers who are members of the Chemistry Subject Teachers’ Association (MGMP Kimia) of MAN Malang City and MAN Malang Regency.
The workshop served as one of UNAIR Chemistry’s contributions to supporting the development of teachers’ competencies, particularly in responding to developments in chemistry learning and assessment at the senior high school and Madrasah Aliyah levels. Through this activity, participants received training covering learning strategies, problem-solving, and an in-depth exploration of chemistry concepts. Several UNAIR Chemistry lecturers also participated as speakers, presenting topics relevant to the needs of chemistry education. Dr. rer. nat. Ganden Supriyanto, M.Sc. opened the sessions by discussing chemistry learning and assessment strategies for senior high schools in preparation for the TKA Era and Science Olympiads.
The next session was delivered by Prof. Dr. Muji Harsini, M.Si., who discussed strategies for solving chemistry problems, calculations, and the qualitative analysis of cations and anions. Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Hartati, M.Si. explored structure and reactivity, covering the concepts of elemental chemistry, coordination, and the nomenclature of inorganic compounds. In the following session, participants were invited to deepen their understanding of organic chemistry through a presentation on reasoning about the reactivity of organic compounds, from molecular structures to predicting reaction products, delivered by Prof. Dr. Mulyadi Tanjung, M.S. The discussion continued with Prof. Dr. Pratiwi Pudjiastuti, M.Si., who presented strategies for predicting various reactions, including substitution, elimination, carbonyl, and nitrogen-compound reactions.
The series of presentations concluded with a session on the chemistry of life: integrating the concepts of organic macromolecules and biochemistry in the context of everyday phenomena, delivered by Prof. Dr. Sri Sumarsih, M.Si. The session encouraged participants to recognize the connections between chemistry concepts and various phenomena encountered in daily life.
In addition to the presentations, the workshop featured discussion and question-and-answer sessions, providing teachers with opportunities to exchange experiences and discuss various challenges in teaching chemistry at madrasahs.
The participation of UNAIR Chemistry lecturers in this workshop was part of an effort to build synergy between higher education institutions and schools. Through this collaboration, the development of teachers’ competencies is expected to continue, while also creating opportunities for knowledge exchange between academics and educators at the senior high school and Madrasah Aliyah levels. The activity continued until the afternoon and concluded with a discussion and closing session. UNAIR Chemistry continues to encourage collaboration and academic contributions to support the improvement of chemistry education quality at the secondary education level.
